The Viking Museum in the Danish town of Ladby on the island of Funen is trying its hand at a new activity: shipbuilding. As a result, a full-fledged copy of the ancient ship will be created: 21.54 meters long and 2.92 meters wide with space for 32 oarsmen. The ship will be launched in the summer of 2014.
This large-scale project is based on two smaller ones, Dansk.ru reports. This is a repair of a Faroese ship found last year: it is only 80 years old, but in its structure it is in many ways reminiscent of a Viking ship. The second project is the construction of a small drakkar of the ancient Scandinavians: 6.5 meters long and 1.38 meters wide, with a crew of 2-3 people.
After the successful completion of these projects, the museum will be ready to implement its most ambitious plan. It is planned that construction will be carried out as it would have been carried out in Viking times. The craftsmen will be volunteers from the Ladby Ship Guild, and the consultant will be shipbuilder Hanus Jensen from the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde.
