The Yangshan Quarry is located near the town of Nanjing in Jiangsu Province, China. It is a historic site where a large unfinished stele, known as the Yangshan Stele, is still attached to the bedrock. The stele is believed to have been commissioned during the reign of the Yongle Emperor in the Ming Dynasty, around the early 15th century.
The Yangshan Quarry is famous for the massive size of the stele and the techniques used to carve it out of the rock. The stele itself is estimated to weigh around 8,000 metric tons and is about 16.7 meters (55 feet) tall. It is believed to be one of the largest stone steles in the world.
The quarry site is also known for its impressive examples of ancient stone-cutting technology, including the use of large incisions, channels, and holes made in the rock to extract the massive stone blocks. The quarry is a significant archaeological site that provides insight into the methods and tools used by ancient Chinese craftsmen to quarry and shape stone.
