In the sprawling wilderness of Tsavo National Park, where the rhythm of life pulses with the heartbeat of nature, a lone bull elephant found himself in desperate need of assistance. His journey to recovery began with a series of events that underscored the importance of vigilant observation and swift action in preserving Kenya’s natural treasures.

It all started with a discovery on March 17th, when human footprints were detected in the northern reaches of Tsavo East, along the banks of the Tiva River. This area, once a hotspot for poaching and illicit activities, demanded heightened attention to safeguard its inhabitants. With aerial and ground patrols already making strides in curbing illegal incursions, the alertness remained paramount to prevent any resurgence of threats.

During a focused aerial patrol, our vigilant pilot stumbled upon telltale signs of trouble—a makeshift harbor on the river’s southern bank, hinting at human activity. While the culprits remained elusive, our ground teams swiftly dismantled the makeshift camp, signaling a clear message of deterrence. Moving forward, special emphasis would be placed on monitoring this vulnerable region of the park.

But the pilot’s keen eye didn’t stop there. Following unusual elephant tracks that hinted at distress, he dedicated extra time to scouring the area the next day. His perseverance paid off when he spotted the injured elephant standing in a puddle, tenderly attending to its wounded front left ankle joint.

With the gravity of the situation apparent, the SWT helicopter sprang into action to transport Dr. Limo from the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit. Deep within the park, accessibility was limited, and the sandy riverbed posed logistical challenges. Thus, the decision was made to conduct the entire treatment from the air—a feat requiring precision and coordination.

Under the watchful gaze of the hovering plane, the helicopter guided the bull to a suitable clearing, where Dr. Limo administered a tranquilizer from above. With the bull sedated, the ground team swiftly moved in to commence treatment. The wound, caused by an arrow piercing through bone and joint, was severe and infected, necessitating immediate attention.

After thorough cleaning and packing with natural green clay to aid healing, the team administered long-acting antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. As the anesthesia was reversed, the bull stirred back to consciousness, a testament to the skill and dedication of all involved. With a solemn gaze, he bid farewell to his caretakers and ambled off into the wilderness, his journey to recovery underway.
