In the rainy season like this, puddles of water or mud pits are also a problem in daily life. Because it makes traveling difficult for us. Plus it got dirty on our car too.
But it wasn’t as big a problem for us as it was for the elephant. Because the muddy pond would almost certainly cause it to die in the pond if no one came to help.
In August 2018 in Kenya. An elephant in a protected area in Kiboko district is in distress because it is stuck in a mud pit. He also sank half his body down to the point where he couldn’t come up on his own.
He probably didn’t notice that the muddy ground in front of him was a deep mud pit. When he realized it again, the weight of his body had taken all 4 of his legs down. Even if I can’t move, I can’t escape.
Wildlife rangers came across it while patrolling the area. But he couldn’t help it come up on his own. Therefore, we had to enlist a large number of villagers and animal rescue groups in the area to help. Let me tell you that this event is truly an elephant event.
They first tied it with a rope and tried to pull it up, but to no avail. This was because the mud in which it was immersed was too sticky. Even though I brought a car to help pull it, I still couldn’t get it out.
It sank too deep I used a car to pull it up and it didn’t work.
Rob Branford , director of the David Sheldrick Trust , an elephant rescue group , explains: “The big problem is that he’s stuck here with no food or water. And the more it tries to pull itself out, the more energy it wastes.
Plus, it doesn’t have an umbrella to hide from the strong sun, and it can’t use its ears to help fan it because it’s stuck. Luckily, our support team was able to administer the oil through a tube. So he got to drink some water.”
Even though it still can’t be helped. The villagers and the rescue team still did not give up. They are still trying to help him. Trying to use a car to pull it again. Then pour water on it to soften the soil.
Until on the third day they were able to help him, they finally succeeded in using a car to pull him back to his feet. The elephant himself still looked dazed. With so many people coming to help him.
Branford said: “There are obstacles in the ground that are unstable. And the car was still stuck in the mud. But the more obstacles there are, the more we worry about it. It is the driving force for us to try and help him until he is successful.”
