Abuna Yemata Guh is a unique and historic rock-hewn church located in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,580 meters (8,460 feet) above sea level, this church is perched on the top of a sheer cliff in the Gheralta Mountains, making it one of the most inaccessible churches in the world.
The church was carved out of solid rock on the edge of a cliff, and to reach it, visitors must climb a vertical rock face using handholds and footholds that have been worn into the rock over centuries. The climb is not for the faint of heart and requires a good level of physical fitness and a head for heights.
Abuna Yemata Guh is dedicated to Abuna Yemata, one of the Nine Saints who came to Ethiopia from the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century to spread Christianity. The church is still an active place of worship, and priests and pilgrims regularly make the treacherous journey to reach it.
