Director Justin Lin says that Fast & Furious 10 & 11 will be one chapter set across two movies. Lin entered the Fast & The Furious franchise with the third film in the series, The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift. He then directed the fourth, fifth and sixth installments before handing the keys over to James Wan for Furious 7, followed by F. Gary Gray for The Fate of the Furious. Lin re-entered the franchise with this year’s long-delayed F9 and is set to helm the next two films in the series, which will be the last in the main narrative.
Lin took some time between Fast & Furious movies to make the third film in the Star Trek series, Star Trek Beyond and dipped his toe in TV, directing episodes of HBO’s True Detective, S.W.A.T. and Magnum P.I. It was recently announced that Fast & Furious 10 would have a release date of April 7, 2023 and that it would be the first of a two-part finale. The finale will mark an end to the central storyline with Vin Diesel’s Dominick Toretto and his gang of car thieves turned international government agents. The general plot is unknown, but is expected to pick up where F9 left off and tie up all loose ends that have been dangling since the initial Fast & Furious
film was released back in 2001.

Talking to Collider, Lin confirmed that both Fast & Furious 10 and 11 would be one chapter set across two films. He went on to explain that when he first joined the franchise a sequel “was not a given” and had to be “earned.” With the franchise firmly established as a box office hit, however, Lin has now been given the green light to work on two more movies that will tell the final chapter of the main storyline. “The idea of the last chapter being two films is correct. I have to say, I’m so glad — because I think when I first entered this franchise, a sequel was not a given. You had to earn it, you know? And so to be sitting here talking to you and go, ‘Oh yeah, there’s gonna be two more movies!’ I’m like, ‘Wow.’ It means a lot. So, every day when I wake up, I’m trying to reconfigure and make sure hopefully whatever we’re talking about process wise is gonna yield the best result. But I think having one chapter in two movies is correct. That’s where I sit today.”
It’s expected that the key Fast & Furious actors will be returning for the final two films, including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Tyrese Gibson. However, one actor who will not be returning to close out the saga is Dwayne Johnson. Johnson, who entered the franchise with Fast Five, was missing from F9 and said he had no intention to return after an on-set falling out with co-star Diesel. Johnson teamed up with Jason Statham for a Fast & Furious spinoff film, Hobbs and Shaw, and has expressed interest in continuing down that path, but not the main series.
Shooting big franchise films back-to-back is nothing new, and with the Fast & Furious franchise being one of the largest cash cows at Universal, it makes sense that the studio would want to stretch out a finale that would potentially turn off that spigot for good. Of course, with that kind of success, it’s implausible to think that Universal wouldn’t continue the series in however many spinoffs they can justify, but the recycling of Dom and his crew being enlisted for yet another insane heist/mission appears to be winding down. While it’s been a fun ride, it’s better to finish on a high, rather than blow out the engine. With all the spinoff potential The Fast & Furious franchise has, it will be refreshing to see what some new models can do with the old formula, so long as it’s always about the most important thing to the series: family.
