Kansas photographer Tammy Karin never passes up an opportunity to capture a water birth. Kansas photographer Tammy Karin never passes up an opportunity to capture a ᴡᴀtᴇʀ ʙɪʀtʜ. Karin explains: “The mother has this war, protectiʋe ʙᴀʀʀɪᴇʀ around her to bring her baby into the world. She can get help if she wants or needs it, but it’s almost like this wonderful force field that lends itself to this more hands-off environment.”
Karin, a mother of three, adds that “the ᴡᴀtᴇʀ ʙɪʀtʜ stories I have had the honor of documenting have been resolved with the gentlest entries into the world for 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦. From the warmth of her mother to the warm waters, straight into her mother’s arms, it is such a smooth transition. “I would have liked to have had the opportunity to bring my own daughters into the world in that way.”
According to Minneapolis-based photographer Jennifer Celine, what’s particularly special about photographing children is “seeing a new ᴇᴍᴇʀɢᴇ moment of water in mom and/or dad’s arms.” Celine said: “Seeing the strength, beauty and sense of calm of a mother during the birth of her little one is absolutely incredible.”
The theory behind ᴡᴀtᴇʀ ʙɪʀtʜ, is that “since the baby has already been in the ᴀᴍɴɪᴏtɪᴄ ꜰʟᴜɪᴅ sᴀᴄ for nine months, giving birth in a similar and less delicate environment for the baby ꜰᴜʟ for the other.” ᴡᴀtᴇʀ ʙɪʀtʜs ads highlight many benefits. It provides pain relief, can reduce headaches, promotes relaxation and helps the mother feel more in control during labor and pregnancy. Water is easier to enter in different positions because ɢʜt ᴇɪɢʜt ᴇɪɢʜt ᴇɪɢʜt ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄ, and this can help the 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 move forward in the ʙɪʀtʜ ᴄᴀɴᴀʟ.
While ᴡᴀtᴇʀ ʙɪʀtʜ remains ᴄᴏɴtʀᴏᴠᴇʀsɪᴀʟ in some circles, the American College of Oʙstᴇtʀɪᴄɪᴀɴs and Gʏɴᴇᴄᴏs suggests that it is ᴇxᴘᴇʀɪᴍᴇɴtᴀʟ ᴘʀᴏᴄᴇᴅᴜʀᴇ that should only be performed in the context of an appropriately designed ᴄʟɪɴɪᴄᴀʟ tʀɪᴀʟ with informed consent”: hospital options are increasingly of going through ʟᴀʙᴏʀ or eʋen giving birth in a pool of warm water. If you’ve ever wondered what a ᴡᴀtᴇʀ ʙɪʀtʜ looks like, these powerful images speak for themselves.
