Mom goes viral after giving birth to son in ocean

A young mother has gone viral after sharing video of her son’s birth in the Pacific.

Josy Peukert, 37, uploaded a post to Instagram showing her and her partner Benni Cornelius, 42, driving to the beach so she could have her baby on the coast of Playa Majagual, Nicaragua.

The video of waves pounding her back as she writhes through contractions in pain has been viewed over 200,000 times.

Josy told Jam Press, “The waves had the same rhythm as the contractions, that gentle flow made me feel really good.”

“I had this idea in my head that I wanted to give birth in the sea, and because the conditions were right that day, I did it.”

Once Josy knew she was going into labour, her children went to friends’ house and Benni drove the couple to the beach with a birthing kit that included towels, a bowl with a strainer to collect the placenta, gauze and paper towels.

Josy said: “After Bodhi was born and wrapped in towels, I went back to the sea to refresh myself.

“Then I got dressed and we packed up and went home, where the three of us went straight to bed.

“Later that evening we weighed Bodhi with a luggage scale, he weighed 3.5 kg or 7 lb 6 oz.”

The mother-of-four said she wanted her baby to be born without medical intervention because doctors and midwives take away what a woman’s body can do on its own.

She said: “I wanted to be carefree for once.

“My first birth in a clinic was traumatic and my second birth was a home birth, but the third was even one midwife too many in my house.

“This time I had no doctor appointments or scans or outside influences.

Free birth: She said she had

Free birth: She said she had “no fears or worries”, just herself, her partner and the waves. It was wonderful

“We didn’t have a due date or deadline for the baby to arrive, we just trusted that our baby would find its way.

“I had no fear or anxiety about welcoming a new little soul into our lives, just me, my partner and the waves. It was wonderful.

“The soft volcanic sand beneath me reminded me that between heaven and earth there is nothing but life.”

She said: “For weeks I’ve been monitoring the tides and when the time came for my birth I knew the beach would be safe for us.

“Bodhi is a really calm and contented baby. Everything is wonderful for him when he is in mom’s arms.

“It’s just as relaxed as it is in my stomach.”

Josy and her husband were said to have emigrated from Germany to Nicaragua, where they met and had their first child together, Marley Mune, now two. Together they have seven children.

When Bodhi was two days old, Josy shared a video and birth story on her Instagram page @raggapunzel, where she has 6,800 followers and her video has been shared around the world. It has since been viewed over 200,000 times.

However, after sharing her experience, Josy received some concerned and criticized comments about her decision to give birth freely in the sea.

One commenter asked: “Is this sanitary? There are many bacteria in the sea.”

Another wrote: “What a shock to this Bubba – from a warm womb into the cold ocean.”

What is a “free birth”?

A free birth, or unassisted childbirth (UC), refers to a woman’s decision to give birth at home or elsewhere without the help of a healthcare professional, according to Doula UK.

While the medical profession sees the practice as a risk to both mother and child, the organization says it is a “fully legal and legitimate, informed choice for a woman in the UK”.

However, Article 45 of the Nursing and Midwifery Regulations makes it an offense for any unqualified person to give birth to a baby, unless it is an emergency.

Statistics on the number of UCs in the UK have not been collected by the NHS.

In the United States, around 7,000 babies are born without medical assistance each year.

But it’s not clear what proportion of these are voluntary freebirths, as the figure naturally includes “pre-arrival births” where there was no time for medical intervention.

On Instagram alone, the Freebirth Society, of which Lisa was a member, has more than 22,000 members.

In response to the trolls, she added: “Bodhi was born in the midday sun when it was around 35 degrees, we weren’t worried at all that he would be cold and I wasn’t concerned about water infections.

“He is perfectly healthy. I’ve done all the necessary research to make sure it’s safe.

“Water is a medically proven barrier.

“For myself and this baby, I wanted to feel fully connected through my own self-directed caregiving.

“This pregnancy was the greatest gift we could imagine and wish for.”
